“It is more blessed to give than to receive.” Acts 20:35
Usually Saturdays are used for running errands one can’t tend to during the week. The sixth day can also be a day to sleep in and chill. However, in a disciples’ life – every day – is devoted to serving and giving to others.
This past Saturday, August 24, a couple of service opportunities showed several disciples that there actually is a great joy in giving on days when some don’t.
At about 8:15 AM, disciples from our church began to gather at 11 Hawthorne Street in Providence to serve at a food pantry. Greeting the needy, setting out food, packing bags and showing love were all parts of the morning. A side benefit was meeting new people and fellowshipping with other brothers and sisters.
On the same day, many other Christians also gathered at 11:30 AM to help Steve and Alexis Schnell move into their new apartment at 1510 Westminster Street in Providence. The narrow stairs leading up to a second-floor apartment were causes for stress and sore muscles. But once the couches, chairs and beds made their way up – the pizza lunch to follow was full of laughter and smiles.
What are your weekends like? Of course, many duties must be done. But let’s remember Jesus’ charge that the greatest life will be lived by those who serve others.
