On Sunday, May 10, the members of the Ocean State Church of Christ – along with many friends and relatives – gathered at the French American School to sing praises to God and also honor the many mothers among us.
The service began with inspiring singing. Then five of our congregation’s kids shared thoughts about why they love their mothers (and, in one case, his grandmother as well). Following the loud applause, a touching video entitled “Motherhood” was shown.
Dr. David Sam led our hearts in a moving communion message. He spoke vulnerably about how he was stopped and given a speeding ticket. Then, in the appeals process, the judge signed the form with the letters “NR.” This stood for “Not Responsible.”
He talked about the cross giving us the grace to not be held responsible for our sins through Jesus.
Doug Purdue helped prepare us to give by sharing a passage about the giving hearts of Cain and Abel. One man gave from the first fruits, the best he had. One did not.
The lesson of the day focused us on Psalm 24 and was called “Clean Hands and a Pure Heart.” Prior to that, we had our first of what we hope will be many “Mother of the Year” competitions. Two wonderful ladies visiting our congregation tied for the award of most children with five. They happily received Starbucks gift cards.
On one day, we had the privilege of thanking the mothers who brought us into this world and the God who allowed it all to happen. Let’s continually thank Him for that.
