Once a month, our congregation moves out midweek service to Friday night. This allows for a more relaxed atmosphere. We typically do more interactive events and often have food together. But Friday night, February 16, highlighted three key words and Biblical principles.
First, we focused on creation. God is the great creator and He has passed that along to us. After drawing pictures of a giraffe, we found that we are all creative. We have different gifts but can create for God in areas such as encouraging others, raising money for the poor and/or the arts.
Secondly, we made some nominations. We read the Biblical passages regarding elders and wives. The New England churches of Christ have begun an elders’ training program. We want to send some disciples in to learn how to be great shepherds and overseers. So, we asked the church for their ideas of who should be these people in our church. We look forward to the day we can appoint these special leaders in Rhode Island.
Finally, we got a front row seat to the salvation of two souls. Both Jack Kent and Kat Work were baptized into Christ. Jack is a senior at Brown University. He brought several friends with him on this memorable evening. He read a moving statement of faith which described being a disciple as the pinnacle experience of his life.
Kat is a single woman who trains horses. Even though sick on this evening, she came to celebrate both her physical birthday (22) and her spiritual one!
Praise God for His purposes, plans and people. May we welcome in these new disciples in a way that honors Him.
