On Saturday, June 2, dating couple Sam Saarinen and Jiayin Sperry went on a walk toward a beautiful spot at India Point Park in Providence. On their way, Sam gave his girlfriend a card. It was nice but didn’t say exactly
what she was hoping for inside.

So they walked on a little ways. Card #2 came out of his pocket. Again, encouraging but falling short of her desired result. Since they were on the side of the road, it also seemed like a bizarre place for card opening.

Finally, they arrived at the park and Jiayin was handed Card #3. Though she was thoroughly impressed with his writing skills by this point, Jiayin became discouraged that “the question” would not be coming. Perhaps he
was just being extra nice, since he was leaving town the following day to go to Kentucky for seven weeks.

As they neared the bridge, Sam stopped and handed over Card #4. Inside, it was blank. It was then, Sam got down on one knee and asked if Jiayin would marry him. Following a bit of confusion and the ultimate “yes,” Daniel Gifford and Hannah Baker jumped from the bushes – where they had been filming.

A pair of surprise parties awaited the pair – in Providence and Springfield (at Jiayin’s parents’ home). The following Sunday, Sam and Jiayin shared for communion, with Jim Wick’s words on the screen behind them . . .“The
Future Mr. and Mrs. Sam Saarinen.”
