No Sunday service is ever the same. All of them inspire in different ways when our hearts are set on worship. However, there are those definite memorable ones that kind of take your breath away. Sunday, May 7, was like that.
First, Dave and Lori Seavey were back in Providence sharing for communion. That gave us an extra boost and special excitement as old friends, as David shared, came “back home.”
Also, 117 people filed into the auditorium. It was a large crowd for our new congregation and it wasn’t even a neighbor day. Folks just came to be with friends and to see Jesus.
Angel’s & Angelica’s Baptism
Shirley’s Baptism
Last and surely not least, three people were baptized on this fantastic day. One, Shirley Garcia, was immersed during the service. Her boyfriend, Walter, shared with tears. Her aunt and uncle from Boston, Juan and Elba also joined in. Shirley spoke, with her two young kids looking up at and to their “new” mom.
After service, two brave souls (Angel Mercado and Angelica Sanchez) led us many of us down to Narragansett Beach for their immersions. A large crew followed them out of love and the spirit of adventure. Angel and Angelica are engaged to be married. They love Narragansett – even enough to go down in freezing cold, ocean water. With sins being washed away, they hardly cared. Their joy was evident. They too had been shared about during the service and both proclaimed “Jesus is Lord!”
And so, all that was left during the service was the sermon, which we really didn’t have time for. So, instead, we all built an impromptu altar to the Lord (an “Ebenezer,” as the song Come Thou Fount speaks of). Shoes, Bibles, bracelets, song books, notebooks, church invitation cards and more were piled high on a table to commemorate the great day for God.
As the momentum in our church continues to build, let’s consistently share, care and baptize. It is the way that God’s love and grace will go around the world.
