About one year ago, David Boerma and Jessica Kirkus were about to be married. Several disciples from Clemson, South Carolina, came up to Providence to encourage them in their new northern home. The crew went out to Starbucks one day and shared with an employee. He seemed interested in spiritual things and his phone number was passed on to David and Paulo Martins. At the time, there was no official Ocean State Church of Christ.
Over time, that seeded planted began to grow in that Starbucks employee’s heart. His name was Aaron Hebert and he began to study the Bible and attend church services. Aaron is very real. If he is not ready for something, he will tell you. For several months, many Christians hung out with, studied the Bible and prayed for Aaron.
Many months later, the break-through came. While reading on his own, Aaron stumbled across John 3 and the section regarding the new birth of water and the spirit. This jumped out and grabbed him – leading him to more study and great urgency.
Surrounded by his parents, two brothers and a host of disciples – Aaron was immersed into Christ on Friday, April 24. Following the baptism, a party broke out with food, laughter and a back-yard bonfire.
We praise God that what started as a seed sown by Southerns is now growing strong in Rhode Island. As the song says, “You’ve got to take the Lord with you everywhere you go.” A few disciples did, God’s Spirit worked and the rest is history (or as disciples like to say – His story).
