For the second year in succession, the Ocean State Church of Christ played host to campus students who gave up their spring break to come to town to bond, share their faith and encourage their brothers and sisters in the Lord.
On Sunday night and Monday morning, eight college disciples descended on Providence from several different locations. Though most 18-22 year olds look forward to their break for sleep, mama’s cooking and relaxation – this group came to Providence to serve.
The average campus swap day included some fun (cliff walk, Dave and Busters, etc.), food (Mella’s pasta, Purdue’s tacos, Anita’s lasagna, etc.) and sharing (reaching out at RIC, CCRI, Johnson and Wales and Brown University).
First of all – the results cannot be overlooked. In less than a week (the students left on Saturday morning), nearly 200 phone numbers of interest were received, about 20 Bible Talk visitors showed up at Rhode Island College and numerous one-on-one Bible studies took place. But far beyond the results – hearts were touched, new friendships formed and a memorable week was had by all (including our church!).
At the climactic Friday devotional where the campus swappers connected with our entire church for some short speeches, a Family Feud game and some snacks – smiles and hugs abounded.
Perhaps our Christians will most remember me giving the married men the word “house” as opposed to “building” to spur them to victory in that one Family Feud round. However, I will most remember the zeal, enthusiasm, humility and tears of the campus swappers who have changed us all for the better forever.
Special thanks goes to Tiffany Ng (Salem State), Laura Collins (Salem State), Sarah Collins (Salem State), Adrianne Smith (U Mass, Amherst), Corina Alvarado (Leslie University), Peter Chao (University of Bridgeport), George Murray II (University of New Haven) and Riley Knebes (University of New Haven). I’d also like to thank Ryan Painter from Worcester who oversees the campus swap program around New England.
