“God Shock” Theme Closes Out with Guest Speakers Eric & Emmanuelle Jette

The Ocean State church recently finished a textual study of the book of Colossians. Following these studies, we typically do a topical series or two. In the fall, we have planned a “Culture Shock” series inspired by the book Chip Ingram wrote with that same title. Prior to the campus students arriving, we decided to do a short study we called “God Shock.” This series looked at some ways that what we learn about God would stun us. Series titles included “The Awful, Goodness of God;” “A Jealous God” and “God is a Package Deal.”

For our series finale, we were visited by the Jettes from Worcester. Their last couple of years have been very challenging. Emmanuelle’s father died, Emmanuelle was diagnosed with cancer and their 25-year- old son died in a car crash. Through tears and deep emotion, the Jettes shared about their struggle for faith in the tough times. Their words inspired us all, and the Jettes are able to give now to others in ways never imagined.

We were all challenged to read the stories of the Bible through the lens of faithfulness to God no matter what, not just a sense of “give me the miracles.” God shocks us regularly with his love, mercy and grace – but also his intensity and randomness. May we learn to love Him for who He is, not who we want Him to be.
